I think I'm addicted to buying sketch books, lol. Which is odd in itself but made even stranger by the fact that I rarely sit and just doodle like a lot of artists out there. The whole draw a circle/oval thingy as a base for the head never made sense to me and I've tried it a gazillion times. I just recently got past thinking grids and using reference photos isn't cheating. The mind boggles. Oh and on a related note... Do you refer to yourself as an artist? I do but it took me years to get confident enough to use the term around others in reference to myself. With the jewelry I make people nod and generally agree the term fits, even if just loosely. However when used in reference to my other stuff I usually get one of three reactions; indifference, total agreement, or total disagreement. Have you had any interesting experiences because of this or due to your art in general?

I got told I have absolutely no artistic skill or talent yesterday. The kicker? I got told it twice, by people I care about. The first called my art a complete waste of time, effort, and only slightly better than when I was my daughters age. She is two. Nice. The second person said my work was average and probably as good as it would ever get because I have no natural talent, at all. Thanks.

Guess what? They can have their opinions and I can disagree. I'm going to keep practicing and prove them wrong. I am already getting better. I will continue to get better. Maybe it is just that I've never really been this serious about getting better? They aren't used to me actually trying this hard? What exactly are they using as comparison for their opinions in the first place?

I'm going to go sketch now, thanks.
